The Type 99 tank only began development in the late 1980s and was introduced in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Thus, they have learned a trick or two by watching the modern development of tanks in those countries and biding their time. They were not forced to prove battlefield prowess in the European killing fields of World War Two like the Russians, British, Americans, and Germans. The Chinese are fairly new to the tank-building game. However, it is still considered a third-generation tank and not next-generation like Russia’s T-14 Armata, Japan’s Type 10, or South Korea’s K2 Black Panther. It has modern armor, an improved gun, better fire control systems, and enhanced communication features. The final evolution of the Type 88 design, the Type 96 entered service with the People's Liberation Army (PLA) in 1997. The Type 99 has some commendable features.
